How To Start Building Credit
The best way to start building credit is to just
take action and do it. I know this sounds to simple. But the fact of the matter is that many people get stuck
doing nothing when all they need to do is something. But here are some different ideas to get you going on your
credit acquisition journey.
You have multiple options to start building
credit. Only you can make the decision as to which of these makes the most sense for you and your
situation.
First and foremost is getting a credit card.
There are several credit card providers that work with people that have no or little credit. These cards will
typically have an annual fee and are usually smaller charge cards, $500 or less.
Another easy option is to apply for a store
charge card. Almost all large stores have credit card programs. Target, Wal-Mart, clothing stores etc all have
cards you can apply for. Next time you are out shopping fill out an application and see what happens. You’ll
more than likely be happily surprised.
Talk to your bank. The bank wants to loan you money. Let them know that you have no or limited credit but that you want to get
started in building credit. They will more than likely provide you with lots of different options. Credit cards,
personal loans, car title loans or even a line of credit are all products you might be
offered.
One of these products is a good idea to have
anyway. That product is over the limit protection. If you over draw your account this product will take over and
pay the amount owed instead of getting over draft fees. Many times these products will report to the credit
bureaus.
Having A Hard Time Starting To Build Credit?
If you are having a hard time getting approved
for credit you may need to look at some sort of secured loan. This may be in the form of a secured credit card,
asset loan or title loan. In other words you are putting up collateral in order to get a loan.
Here’s one final thing you need to be aware of
on how to start building
credit and it is a doozy and will make all the
difference.
Regardless of what product you decide to use to
start building credit there is something that you need to ask and be aware of before you apply. That thing is to
make sure that the creditor will be reporting your credit history to the credit bureaus. If they are not going
to report your information to the bureaus you are just wasting your time.
Make sure to ask whether they will be reporting
to all 3 major credit bureaus. Some creditors only report to 1 bureau. Some only report to 2 bureaus. Some will
report to all 3 bureaus. I would highly recommend using creditors that will be reporting to all 3
bureaus.
